From “original history” to “old history” – Comparative discussion of “Shi Wei” and “School Discussion”

Abstract: As two representative works on “previous history”, “Shi Wei” and “School Discussion” have many differences in historical relations, meridian relations, traditions of modern and ancient Chinese literature and writing styles. Specifically, in terms of historical relations, Zhang Ertian proposed the “original history” and “six works are all history”, and advocated the series of Zhang history; Meng Wentong proposed the “old history” and advocated the different paths of history. In terms of the relationship between the sect, Zhang Ertian mixed his schooling into the study of predecessors, and viewed the hundreds of schools as “the arts of the past kings”; Meng Wen Tong used the planning of the historical relationship between the Qing Dynasty to make the sect parallel to the study, and then used the study to integrate the schooling. In the traditional Chinese and modern Chinese literature, Zhang Ertian has also studied both ancient and modern Chinese literature, and used the traditional historical context of modern Chinese literature to describe the academic context; Mongolian Chinese literature has broken through the academic vision of modern Chinese literature and started a modern research on academic development. “Shi Wei” and “Study Distinguishing Origin” highlight the academic form of two different differences in traditional and modern writings, but the value of learning is not as simple as using the standard of traditional and modern dichotomy to balance and divide the power and division, but presents a mysterious situation.

The description of the historical process generated by learning is undoubtedly a problem that comes from the beginning of the writing of history. Since academic history has its own history, of course it also has its own history. However, as the creator of modern writings of history, Pi Xirui’s account of Confucius’ learning has a certain anti-historical style. In his academic studies, there has been a long historical process since his birth, but there is no history to be said about the generation of his own reactions. “History of Learning” is exactly in this slander. With the differences between Baoqing, Zhang Ertian, especially focused on the department that studies “previous history”, worked hard to write the history generated by his writing in the name of “original history”, and was interested in continuing the writing style of traditional learning. Therefore, his “Shi Wei” presents a self-reflection on “Study History”. Meng Wentong’s “Original Discussion” is named “old history” and uses modern academic research and discussion methods to perform “original” tasks. From “original history” to “old history”, the discussion styles of “Shiwei” and “Study Discussion” on “previous history” are very different, showing the grand power between traditional narratives and modern research, and are of relatively valuable research.
A “history” of two different differences

In fact, the difference between the “old history” mentioned by Meng Wentong and the “original history” mentioned by Zhang Ertian is not very big, but its discussion and traditional history comparison can be said to be extremely confusing.
